When I was a child in Africa, infection, disease and injury seemed ever present and that experience has always stayed with me even though rates of mortality there have plummeted since then. My exhibition Corporeal Insults in 1999 at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead and the Künstlerhaus Ulm in Germany, explored this issue, but I felt many people couldn’t understand what it was about because it was so far removed from their own experience. Most of the works have been sold or dispersed but you can see them on my website under Corporeal Insults.
